3 Different ways to say “I guess” in Thai

4 Elements
สวัสดีค่ะ (sà-wàt-dii kà - hello) GL lovers! 💜 This week, we're breaking down three ways to say I guess in Thai for you to practice while guessing which GL couples will be what elements in the 4 Elements project:
Thai Word | Meaning | Example Sentence | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
เดาว่า (dao wâa) | Guess that... (Used when making a random guess) | เดาว่าเธอยังไม่ตื่น (Chan dao wâa thoe yang mâi tûen) เดาว่าเป็นน้ำหนึ่งเนย (Dao wâa pen NamneungNoey) | “Guessing you’re still asleep." |
ทายว่า (thaai wâa) | Predict that... (Used in a fun, game-like way) | ทายว่าใครจะชนะ? (Thaai wâa khrai jà chana?) ทายว่าเป็นอิงล็อต (Thaai wâa pen EngLot) | "Guess who will win?" |
คาดว่า (khâat wâa) | Expect that... (Used when making an assumption based on reasoning or researching) | คาดว่าฝนจะตก (Khâat wâa fŏn jà tòk) คาดว่าเป็นฟรีนเบค (Khâat wâa pen FreenBeck) | "It is expected to rain." |
FYI: In Thai, it's common to omit the subject (pronoun) when the context makes it clear who is being referred to. This makes Thai sentences feel more natural and fluid in casual speech. Sometimes, you might not see the subject, just like in the examples today. However, if you want to add the subject, you can just place the pronoun before the phrase. For example:
ฉันเดาว่าเป็นคู่นี้ (Chăn dao wâa pen khûu níi) – "I guess it's this couple."
พวกเราทายว่าเป็นคู่นั้น (Phûak rao thaai wâa pen ) – “We predict it's that couple.”
แฟนๆคาดว่าเป็นฟรีนเบค (FanFan khâat wâa pen FreenBeck) – "Fans expect it's FreenBeck."
