The Thai word แพ้ (pháe) has two common meanings, and they are very different! Be careful not to mix them up.

1. แพ้ (pháe) = To lose (a competition)

If you are in a game, a competition, or a fight, and you don’t win, you แพ้ (pháe).

Examples:

  • ฉันแพ้เกม (Chăn pháe game) = I lost the game.

  • ทีมของเราแพ้ (Team khóng rao pháe) = Our team lost.

  • เธอแพ้ฉันแล้ว (Ther pháe chăn láew) = You’ve lost to me!

2. แพ้ (pháe) = To be allergic to something

If your body reacts badly to food, dust, or animals, you แพ้ (pháe).

Examples:

  • ฉันแพ้กุ้ง (Chăn pháe gûng) = I’m allergic to shrimp.

  • เขาแพ้ฝุ่น (Khăo pháe fùn) = He’s allergic to dust.

SLANG: แพ้ (pháe) = To be weak for something

In a slang meaning, แพ้ can also mean being emotionally weak or easily affected by something, especially in a romantic or cute way.

Examples:

  • ฉันแพ้รอยยิ้มของเธอ (Chăn pháe roi-yím khŏng ther) = I’m weak for your smile.

  • เราแพ้สายตาแบบนี้ (Rao pháe sǎai-dtaa bàep níi) = I can’t resist this kind of gaze.

RECAP: How to know the meaning?

  • If it’s about a competition, แพ้ means to lose.

  • If it’s about allergies, แพ้ means to be allergic.

  • If it’s about emotions, แพ้ means to be weak for something or someone.
